What do you think about "startup notes"?

Startup notes

I do agree that making the learning curve gentle and educating a user on their way from being a newbie to a full-fledged power user is generally a good thing to do. At the same time, I don't want to make things any more complicated than is strictly necessary. :)

It's finding that fine balance that is the tricky part!

Startup notes

Hi Dan,

This is a heartfelt plea to save the startup notes feature.  I find it very useful for the table of contents I have in each notebook.  I really do NOT want to have every note visible at startup, it only confuses me!  With the excellent search function, I can find anything not specifically mentioned in my TOC anyway.

Would it be possible to leave the startup notes feature as it is, but add a "Display all notes" option for those who prefer it that way?

Keep up the great work Dan.  Save the StartUp Notes!!

Startup notes:

Hi Gillian,

I think based on this discussion, it's become clear that a number of people really like the startup notes feature, even if it can be confusing to new users. So I think my goal should be to make the feature easier to learn and/or optional. But I don't think I'll be removing startup notes anytime soon!

Thanks for weighing in on the subject!

Dan

Dan,

Keep startup notes.  It's my jumping off point whenever I open Luminotes.

Thanks

Allen

Personally I like the startup notes as well. But for people who don't want to bother with a table of contents note, what if there was a tree in one of the sidebars that would show all of the notes in the notebook? That way you wouldn't have to do a search if you don't know what you're really looking for. It would allow you to look at all (or at least most) of your notes at a glance. Or something like that.

Tree of notes

mikona: That's actually something I've thought of doing. I think the trick though is figuring out how many and which notes to display in the note tree for people who aren't using the startup notes feature. Once a notebook grows past a certain number of notes, showing all of them in a tree just takes up too much space and becomes difficult to navigate. But there has got to be some sort of compromise possible.

Startup Notes

I think startup notes is a good idea, but I think it should be changed. There should be a way to categorize notes. This way I can put chapter 1 notes in a Chapter 1 Category. Then, you can select a whole category to for Startup Notes, and then it would show the different notes and small samples/clips in this style: http://unblab.com/img/screengrab.gif

that would make it more convenient.

EDIT: the tagging idea would actually be better (mentioned on the features page). That way you can assign a note to multiple tags, making it easy to sort through, and then mark tags to show on startup. This would make it easier to implement on the programming part, and would not make categories/sections a requirement for a note (by creating a default tag called "All").

Startup Notes

I am a new user, and I was surprised that there was no easy way to find a linkless note if it wasn't a "startup note". I think the startup note concept is great, but if I was developing the application for myself, then all notebook notes would show in the tree on the left (not just startup notes), with any orphened note titles listed below the tree. For a new user, this wouldn't be a hard concept to grasp as well as providing better functionality in moving around the program. The part I had trouble with was that I couldn't believe that there wasn't an easier way to access notes which lost their links.
Dan, impliment this functionality and I'll be raving to everybody about what a great app you have developed.

Startup notes

shahan312: That's a great idea about making tags either startup or non-startup, so that any note tagged with a startup tag is shown on startup.

beetech: The "recent updates" area actually does show all notes, not just startup notes. It should have a list of everything you've ever edited, even orphaned notes. They are shown in reverse chronological order by update time. (You may have to click the "more" link a few times though to see all of them.) Please let me know what your thoughts are on that.

Re: What do you think about "startup notes"?

I think startup notes should be kept, but the way they work should be changed.
Tags should be implemented, with "All" as the default tag. You can then set a specific tag to show up on startup notes. Also, notes can have multiple tags. (I mentioned this earlier :), but am just responding to the latest update on the question.)
